RELIGION / SPIRITUALITY

This is a report from the trenches of the battle which is going on in Christianity today. Clint Gardner believes that the mainline churches have been too passive in response to fundamentalism’s steady gains. He offers this book as “additional scaffolding” for that new Christian paradigm which has been advanced recently by such spokesmen as Episcopal Bishop John Spong and New Testament scholar Marcus Borg. Drawing on the work of Bonhoeffer, Berdyaev, and Rosenstock-Huessy, Gardner presents a down-to-earth spirituality, one that fully reconciles science and religion. Thus, he replies to those recent atheists who’ve been attacking God as a delusion.

CLINTON GARDNER left the business world in 1979 to begin a new career as President of US-USSR Bridges for Peace, an organization that sponsored Russian-American citizen exchanges. He recently founded a similar project for US-Middle East Dialogue.

In April 1945 Lieutenant Gardner was put in charge of the just-liberated Buchenwald Concentration Camp.

He is a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy and Dartmouth College.
